Meet Our Education Birds

Mr. Blue
In loving memory 2013 - 2018

We are very saddened by the loss of our Education Ambassador Mr. Blue, a Steller’s Jay. He has been a part of Featherhaven since we opened and was the inspiration behind the color of our logo.  Fly High, Mr. Blue, you will always be a special part of Featherhaven!

This Steller's Jay hatched in May 2013. They are monomorphic, which means that the male and female look the same. However, we have had a DNA test done and it's a boy! He was admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation facility when he fell out of his nest in June 2013. Injuries he sustained in that fall made him unable to fly and, therefore, unreleasable. He is intelligent, loud, inquisitive, an amazing mimic, and loves to cache food all over the aviary. Peanuts, corn, and dandelions are his favorites!

Miss Eve

Miss Even is a female Evening Grosbeak as the males are a bright yellow and black. She was admitted to a rehabilitation center as an adult in March 2013 with a shoulder injury that left her unable to fly and non-releasable. Just one look at her beak and you know she has no problem cracking seeds. She loves safflower seeds and waxworms!

Miss Crissy

Crissy is a female Red Crossbill; the males actually have the red coloring. She joined our education program in February 2015 after having her right wing partially amputated by a free roaming cat. She is our little ambassador to encourage people to please keep their cats indoors. Billions of birds die every year from free roaming cats. She can "flit" around the aviary, but does not have enough flight ability to survive in the wild. True to her species, she loves to extract seeds from coniferous cones. Though she will eat commercial seeds, cones are an important enrichment for her.

Vinnie

Vinnie, a male House Finch joined our Education program in January 2018. He is our 2018 Year of the Bird story. You see Vinnie, is protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but someone found him as a baby and decided to keep him as a pet. That is illegal. Vinnie is a healthy bird and should be living a free and wild life….sadly Vinnie likes people and really has no interest in his own species. That makes him non-releasable. He is habituated to people and would not survive very long in the wild.

Though disappointed that Vinnie could not be released to live the life that was meant for him we welcome him to Featherhaven and he seems to be happy in the Education Aviary where he gets people interaction daily.
